Laura Ward, a  researcher from Britain's premier sports university, Loughborough, has urged schools to cut competitive sports in favour of individual pursuits.  Miss Ward believs schools should promote activities such as stretching at the expense of team games such as netball, hockey, football and rugby.
3.1 million pupils aged 5-16 did not play against their classmates, according to government figures for 2007.  Almost 5 million children are not participating in inter-school games and 438 schools do not hold an annual sports day.

Miss ward will claim "too many PE teachers are emphasising the importance of competitive team sports" over lifestyle activities such as yoga and pilates.

Miss Ward argues that a reduced emphasis on competitive sport and fitness would encourage pupils to develop healthy lifestyle habits.  She says too few schools teach helath related exercise - a requirement o timetables since 1992 - properly.
